The run begins south of Utica via Pigeye Road, passing Sapphire Village before turning onto Middle Fork Road. Beyond the Yogo Crossing junction, a high-clearance vehicle becomes essential as the road narrows to a single lane with few passing opportunities. The first obstacles arrive quickly: a shallow Yogo Creek crossing followed by a mile of exposed bedrock and ledges that test driveline geometry and tire placement.

For decades the trail crossed the river 27 times at 85 separate entrances, with vehicles destabilizing banks and clouding the cold, clear water with sediment. A multi-year restoration project led by Trout Unlimited, the U.S. Forest Service, and Montana Trout Unlimited reshaped the route between 2020 and 2024. The new alignment rebuilt a steep, 35-degree incline into a sustainable Jeep trail with switchbacks and upgraded a former motorcycle trail into the rerouted Jeep/OHV route, eliminating several creek crossings and rebuilding more than 1,000 feet of eroded bankline. Drivers now climb out of the riparian zone along Woodchopper Ridge and descend through Arch Coulee, where a previously unmapped natural arch has become a popular photograph spot. River fords still remain on the upper segment, and water depth varies dramatically with seasonal runoff.

The surrounding canyon is rich country. Crystal-clear water passes beneath limestone cliffs and swimming holes, with elk, black bears, and soaring hawks regularly sighted along the corridor. Nineteen private inholdings sit within the wilderness study area, and the restored route was designed to preserve their access while protecting what the Forest Service hopes will return to blue-ribbon trout water. Dispersed camping is available along the approach, and Hay Canyon and Dry Wolf Campgrounds offer developed options nearby.
Wild Montana
Summer and fall are the prime windows. Spring runoff makes the upper crossings unpredictable, and the dirt sections turn deeply rutted and slick after rain. Expect overgrown willow and pine branches in narrow stretches, and plan for a long day with no cell service.
A reborn classic through one of Montana's wildest limestone canyons.
